Last post about hair accessories

Posted on

So for those of you who are interested in making hair accessories that are one of a kind and trust me, these definitely one of kind, since in reality you can’t make two of them identical. I will be giving you a tutorial on how to make funky and crafty hair flower/pretties. They are not quite a flower but if you want to you could make them in that shape. To start your project you will need the following materials:

· Synthetic Silky Fabric (or you can even use silky ribbon) · Scissors · Lighter or Candle (like a tea light) · Needle and Thread ( or a hot glue gun · Buttons or Beads (they are used for the center, so many things can be substituted) ·Glue Dots or Glue Gun (for securing the center jewelry / button ect..)

Step 1: Start by cutting out your pattern
This can be done in many ways, if you would like a flower, see the attached link. If you are doing this like I do and just want to get creative hair
accessories with stuff you find around the house, your shapes could be all over the place. I’ve cut circles, squares, jagged edges and then even take the scraps to use for hair pretties. Once you are satisfied, see below… (Cut at least 5 or more cut outs to complete your accessory)

Step 2: Use the lighter or lit candle to melt the edges
*BE CAREFUL!! It is very easy to get burnt. Hold your cut out shapes about 1-2 inches above the flame, rotating it, so does not overheat and catch fire. Continue to gently melt the edges of each shape until you have gone all the way around. Do this with each of your cut outs

Step 3: Sew or glue your different cut outs together
Glue or sew the cut outs together. If you are running short on time, glue works just fine, just make sure to do it in the middle of your accessory. This works well because we hide the glue with a button, bead or piece of jewelry in the next step.

Step 4: Apply the bead, button or jewelry
You can use just about anything that you find appealing to adorn your accessory. I have even used fake pearls in the past and they look fantastic!

Step 5: Affix a clip
You can attach these to hair barrettes, safety pins or just about anything. I cut out a heart from of piece of fun foam that I found at a craft store and glued it to the back of my hair accessory before gluing the accessory to my clip…see pictures for an example

Korker Bows

Posted on

So as promised, here directions on how to make korker bows.  I just love these! They are a very inexpensive way to make your little one stand out and look girly. Especially if your little one doesnt have hair yet. And in that case, all you need is a plain headband to attach them to.

What you need:
approximately 14 mini korkers  about 2.5 inches each (see first step on how to make these)
a few wooden dowels (you can find them in the craft section at Wal-Mart for about 1-2$ depending on size)
clothes pins or something to secure the ends of the dowels when they are baking

Step 1: Wrap ribbon on wood dowel (1/4″ in diameter), secure ends using wood clips, bake in the oven 250 degree for about 30 minutes (every oven is different. unwrap the end to see if it’s done). * when wrapping the ribbon, its ok to slightly overlap but it should look just like a candy cane. Once they are done, take them out of the oven to cool and cut into 2.5 inch long pieces (cut unstretched) then seal the end. To seal the end just take a lighter and singe the end or use a fray check

Step 2: set aside 14 pieces for your bow

Step 3:Take the first ribbon pull straight, use clips to secure the ends (so both hands free). Put a little bit of hot glue in center, then get the 2nd
korker and glue it on first to form a cross, then take your next piece and add it to make a flower like pattern, do this over and over until you have used all your mini korkers.Basically, balance all the korker pieces just like flower petals.

Step 4: Remove all the clothes pins, fluff the korkers up.

Step 5: Glue your korker bow, on to your clip (you have many options of clips but I prefer the single prong alligator clip) because my daughter has fine hair.

How to save on girl hair accessories

Posted on

Since its that time of year again when everyone wants their little girls to be a cute as can be for those holiday pictures. I figured, what a great time to share some how to ideas and directions on how to save on little girl accessories.  I myself make bows and accessories for my little girl and if I can do it anyone can. 🙂 For starters, I will share with you how to make pinwheel hair bow. I found step by step directions onlince and they are perfect for those who are just starting. You can even see the pictures if you click on the attached link or view just the steps below.

The materials needed to start your accessory are:

1) Grossgrain ribbon ( you can even find a limited selection at the dollar store and its perfect for practicing and just the right size 1.5 inch)

2) 24 gauge craft wire (thread or fishing line work pretty good too… you can substitute with many others as well)

3) hot glue gun or any type of glue to fasten the clip to your bow when it is complete

4) hair clip of choice ( I prefer a single alligator clip since my daughter doesn’t have thick hair and many clips can be found at Salley’s Beauty Supply. I bought a box of 100 for about 5 bucks and that’s pretty cheap!)

Step 1: Cut Ribbon: For this bow (adjust for size you want)  cut a piece of 1.5 inch grosgrain ribbon to 23 inches. Step 2:Make your first loop down with the ribbon making a long tail in front.Step 3: Bring your ribbon “tail” up while keeping a grasp of your first loop Step 4: Bring your “tail” down to start making a second loop Step 5: Bring the tail up from the bottom of your newly formed second loop. Step 6: Pinch and fold in the center twice this is what creates the nice crease. This may take a few times to get a neat fold Step 7: While holding on to your center fold tightly get out your craft wire and tightly wrap it around the center. You can also use thread or fishing line. I prefer wire as it provides a little extra control. If you are going to make a stacked bow I suggest hand sewing your layers together.Step 8: Flip your bow over and even out your loops and then cut your “tails”. I like the triangle but you can use straight lines. Then take a lighter and quickly run the flame over the ends of the ribbon. This will heat seal it and prevent Step 9: To complete the center knot get a smaller piece of ribbon. I future fraying used a 7/8 ribbon. Cut
a piece long enough for you to knot and work with Step 10: Loop it much like an awareness ribbon looks Step 11: Tuck one tail through the loop and pull. Step 12: Once you have pulled it tight you may need to rotate the tails close to the knot so you have a smooth pretty tail coming from either side of the knot. Step 13: Slide in your choice of clip. My daughter has fine hair so we use the alligator clips Step 14: Put a tiny dot of glue on the center of your bow and secure the knot in the center. Then fold each tail over one at a time securing it with hot glue
on the alligator clip with the prong open. Trim the tail and Repeat with the other tail Use your lighter once again to heat seal and exposed ribbon end that you just trimmed up on back side. Step 15: Adjust your “tails” so they are as you like them. Your bow is done! Enjoy!

Later in the week I will be posing other how to’s, so check back.

The picture of the bows are bows that were made with these same directions. * Some of them are a work in process, so no critiquing 🙂

When Savings Suck!

Posted on

Here is my real life story about how saving money can suck! That’s right, you read it correctly, saving money can actually suck. So for those of you who don’t really know me, here are a few details:  I just moved back to Nevada after a one year sabbatical in Utah, due to my fiance’s change of employment (civil engineer). However, when he was offered employment back in Nevada, it didn’t come with the same perks as our move to Utah. Let me explain.  When we moved to Utah, we were packed and moved and didn’t have to pay a penny for any of it. However, now that he has secured employment back in Nevada, we are responsible for the cost of moving our stuff.

This is where the part that sucks comes in. We called a few moving companies and got some quotes.  It should be easy right? Well actually no, because we put all our stuff in a storage a few months before he was offered the job. Since I was returning back to Nevada to take summer classes (June – August) and we were pretty hopeful that he could secure employment there before the end of summer.  So this is where the fun part starts…. since I am a big saver and I have somehow rubbed off on my fiance 🙂 we decided to take the cheaper route and move everything ourselves.

What were we thinking? I know…we were thinking that saving 80% sounded really good to us, since we are perfectly able to move ourselves. However, saving money sometimes comes with driving 16 hours in two consecutive days and doing that trip three times over. Boo! Oh, did I mention that this trip also includes the lovely company of two children!

This is my true story of when savings suck!

*Two trips down, one more to go*
